With numerous buildings that extend over four city blocks and facilities that include both a medical school and a hospital, Boston Medical Center faced major problems helping people find their destinations. In addition to size, design problems included a particularly complex traffic flow, diverse architectural environments and a significant non-English speaking patient base. |

Lasater/Sumpter Design developed a comprehensive wayfinding and interior signage program to address these complex issues. Over a million square feet of publicly accessible space, a complex traffic flow and a multicultural urban location combined to create significant wayfinding challenges at Boston Medical Center. Our strategy was to organize the wayfinding information into two levels - one using building names as the primary directional device and a second level that identifies specific destinations within individual buildings. |

Users are guided to the correct building and/or elevator with the primary directional signage. All signs contain the building name and floor level of their respective location. |

We developed a color coding system to reinforce the directional information and coupled it with a modular assembly system that allows future changes to be made easily and inexpensively. Wall-mounted signage provides directions to specific destinations within a building and includes texts in English, Spanish and French. Various sign sizes are provided to accommodate differing text length requirements. |

A comprehensive standards manual helped Boston Medical Center obtain competitive fabrication bids and will serve to update and extend the system in the future. |
